Facephi Intelligence Platform brings identity verification and ongoing fraud detection together to help financial institutions identify account misuse after a customer has logged in.

Cape Town, South Africa – 19 October 2026

A verified identity does not guarantee that the person operating an account is its rightful owner. For banks and fintechs, detecting what happens after login is an important part of protecting customers against digital fraud.

FINASA member Facephi has announced the launch of Facephi Intelligence Platform, an AI-powered platform designed to connect identity verification with ongoing monitoring of account activity.

The launch addresses a challenge facing financial services providers: criminals can gain control of a customer’s device or account and transact using legitimate credentials. In these situations, the initial identity and access checks may have been completed correctly, while fraudulent activity takes place later.

Connecting identity with account activity

According to Facephi, the platform builds on the customer’s verified identity, adding information from subsequent logins, devices and interaction patterns. This gives financial institutions more context to assess whether activity within a session is consistent with the account holder’s usual behaviour.

The aim is to help institutions detect threats that may pass individual security checks, including account takeover and fraud involving remote access to a customer’s device.

In a scenario described by Facephi, a customer unknowingly installs a malicious application that allows an attacker to control their phone remotely. When the attacker attempts a transfer through the customer’s banking app, the platform identifies remote-access signals and behaviour that differs from the customer’s established patterns.

Facephi says the platform can then raise the session’s risk score, allowing the institution’s configured rules to determine the response. In the example provided, remote control is interrupted while the customer retains access to their banking app, and an alert is sent to the fraud team.

“Artificial intelligence has industrialized fraud, and new frontier AI models, increasingly capable of acting on their own, are going to accelerate that shift. For years, we’ve helped banks know who is opening an account. The problem they bring us now is a different one: knowing who is operating at this very moment, when the access is formally correct. That question isn’t answered with one more control at the door. It’s answered by knowing the customer well enough to notice when whoever is on the other side isn’t behaving like them.” says Javier Mira, CEO of Facephi.

A broader view of customer protection

For South Africa’s fintech sector, the announcement speaks to the challenge of protecting customers throughout their use of digital financial services. Identity verification at account opening is one part of that responsibility. Recognising when a legitimate account is being misused is another.

Facephi Intelligence Platform brings the company’s identity verification and fraud prevention capabilities together around a single customer profile. Facephi says this approach is intended to reduce fragmentation between separate systems and support more informed decisions about session risk.
